Ernest (Ernie) G. Bootsma is a Shareholder in Buchalter’s Portland office and a member of the Firm’s Corporate and Intellectual Property practice groups. Mr. Bootsma represents start-up and growth stage businesses, as well as more mature companies. Akana K. J. Ma

Mr. Ma is a Shareholder in Buchalter’s Portland office and a member of the Firm’s Corporate Practice Group. Mr. Ma works with clients conducting business in the global marketplace to structure effective and efficient transactions; comply with U.S. and foreign laws and regulations; transfer and protect data and technology, intellectual property, and software; negotiate contracts for the sale and distribution of products and services; and establish foreign offices and manufacturing facilities.

He has practiced international business and trade law for more than 30 years. Mr. Ma is a member of the District Export Council for Oregon and Southwest Washington, a U.S. Department of Commerce-appointed group that advises the U.S. government on international trade issues and advises clients about a variety of export issues. Alison M. Pear

Alison M. Pear is a member of the Firm’s Corporate practice group, bringing to the Firm a broad spectrum of experience in corporate governance, business integrity and compliance, securities, mergers and acquisitions, international trade and export controls, and general business law.  Ms. Pear’s practice has included a wide variety of clients, spanning from start-ups to NYSE-traded public companies, on matters ranging from high-stakes acquisitions and financing transactions to daily operational matters. Industry experience includes utilities, banking, life sciences, manufacturing, pooled investment vehicles, angel investing, agribusiness, and technology. She has assisted a wide array of technology, manufacturing and financial services companies with corporate, business and transactional matters. Ms. Pear has significant expertise in federal and state securities law, including the Securities Act of 1933 and the Securities Exchange Act of 1934, and international trade experience with importing products subject to U.S. FDA, EPA and CBP jurisdiction.  She is particularly adept at navigating complex regulatory systems, as well as breaking down regulatory requirements for practical applications in a business setting.
